Abraham Munting began his career as a physician, later becoming a professor of botany at Groningen, directing the Hortus Botanicus Groninganus from 1658-83. He adopted a fascinating style for his illustrations: These amazing plates typically feature plants hovering in front of a pastoral or classic landscape and accompanied by architectural ornaments. Some are shown in unusual pots. The Latin names of the species are often presented on ribbon-like scrolls or tablets. Among the prints are subtropical plants imported for cultivation to the Netherlands. [The Book of Flowers, Alice M. Coats] |
