WELLS, WILLIAM FREDERICK (Germany, 1764 – London, 1834): A fine English watercolour painter and etcher, William Frederick Wells studied art in London under J. J. Barrelet. One of the first generation of watercolour artists, Wells was a founder of the Old Watercolour Society (1804) and became its President in 1806. He traveled extensively both in England and on the Continent, including painting tours to Norway and Sweden. Wells's art was annually exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1795 to 1813. For over twenty years W. F. Wells held the post of Professor of Drawing at Addiscombe College.
WILKINSON, REVEREND JOSEPH (Carlisle, 1764 – Thetford, 1831) : An amateur landscape painter and illustrator, Joseph Wilkinson was educated at Corpus Christi, Cambridge, where he became a Fellow of the College. After serving as a canon at Carlisle he became Rector of Wretham, Norfolk in 1803. He is best known for his designs for Select Views in Cumberland (1810) and The Architectural Remains of Thetford (1822). |
