We are delighted to offer a selection of original hand colored engravings from Illustrations of the "Land and Fresh Water Conchology of Great Britain and Ireland," drawn & coloured by Captain Thomas Brown and published in London in 1845. These finely detailed old engravings describe some of the most beautiful indigenous shells of Great Britain & Ireland, richly colored and true to life.
Captain Brown was a well-known natural history scientist who held many memberships in scientific organizations in 19th-century England including the Royal Physical Society, the Wernerian Natural History Society, and the Manchester Geological and Natural History Societies. He traveled extensively and drew his subjects from live specimens he found on his travels. The fossils in this work were drawn from actual fossils found in the field. |
